Settling in Policy
Statement of intent
We want children to feel safe, stimulated and happy while attending our nursery and to feel secure and comfortable with staff. We also want parents to have confidence in both their children's well being and their role as active partners with the pre-school.
Aim
We aim to make the nursery a welcome place where children settle quickly and easily by catering for the individual needs and circumstances of children and their families.
Methods
Before a child starts to attend the nursery, we use a variety of ways to provide his/her parents with information. These include written information (including our prospectus, relevant policies and Guidelines/Uniform booklet), displays about activities and individual meetings with parents.
During the half term before a child is enrolled, we provide opportunities for the child and his/her parents to visit the setting.
We offer 2 pre-start visits and a free induction session for children to familiarise them with staff and the environment.
When a child starts nursery, we discuss with parents the best way to help their child to settle. If a child has difficulty settling, we liaise further with the family and offer sessions tailored to the child's needs [possibly shorter sessions to begin with, increasing hours gradually as appropriate, or possibly more parental involvement at sessions until a child gains confidence].
We provide an "All About Me" booklet for parents to complete with their child. This highlights likes/dislikes/interests/abilities/health and other issues relevant to the child.
Parents are kept informed of their child's progress and how they are settling in. They have the opportunity to liaise with staff to resolve any concerns they may have.
(This policy was amended in October 2009 and 2011, then revised in March 2013).
